Examples Of Good Customer Service
With all of the work my business puts into courting new customers, you would think that customer retention would play a big part in their business model. It doesn't. None of our employees until recently were examples of good customer service. Some of them did their job okay, but none of them looked particularly pleased to be there. They would sigh and groan, they would take their time filling out orders, and in general they would dillydally. They had never undergone customer service training, and management didn't seem to care. Then something changed. We hired a new employee who was one of the most perfect examples of good customer service. She was only 17 years old at the time, but you could tell that she would eventually have an excellent career in public relations. She just knew exactly how to talk to people. No matter what the situation was, she handled it. Even ornery customers who had come in to pick a fight were no match for her charm. She would flash them a winning smile, calmly discuss the situation with them, and clear things up. Soon, our boss decided to take advantage of her abilities by using them to train the other employees. They made videos of her interacting one-on-one with customers, always with the customer's consent. Not only did she get a pay raise, but she was the only one of us who didn't have to sit through several hours of examples of good customer service. After all, she had involuntarily written the book on it. Now in another workplace, this whole thing could cause a lot of resentment. After all, here we were being shown up by a teenager. The boss, however, knew how to make everything okay. Rather than looking down on us or chastising us, he praised each of our unique skills. I was much more knowledgeable about the products we were selling, and my coworker Mike was very good at keeping track of inventory and informing customers on incremental improvements. So while she was praised for her examples of good customer service, we were also praised for our own skills. A good manager will take the people he or she has and make them all learn from each other. This is exactly what our boss did. Now we are all excellent service minded employees. The company makes more money, we make more money, and the customers go home happy. It's a win-win situation for everyone.
